What event could bring together students teaching etiquette and students teaching others how to use sphero robots? You might wonder why these two topics would be going on at the same time and place, considering the vast difference. This would only take place at a regional STLP showcase. At NKU”s Regional STLP Showcase you will find different projects, not one is the same or even close to the same. All of them have their own uniqueness and that is why STLP is so awesome!
There are four very different categories in STLP. You can find Community Service projects, where you use technology to help you achieve your goal of meeting a need in the community. A second category is Instructional, where you use technology to help improve instruction in the classroom or after school programming. The third area is STEM. This area focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Last, but not least is Technical. Technical showcases focus on teaching and repairing technology to help the school advance it technology integration.
While I was interviewing kids I found a couple of community service projects that really stood out. One was a group called, “Please and Thank You”. Four second grade girls created this project, teaching kids etiquette. Another group was called, “Save The Animals”, this group goes to local animal shelters bringing supplies for the animals. Another group was called, “Jet-Sitters” this group baby sits teacher’s kids when the teachers have to do things right after school.
When I interviewed kids with instructional projects I found a few exemplars, like a digital yearbook. The kids that created this project knew that yearbooks are expensive, so they created a high tech version of a yearbook. Another group created a digital lost and found so that you don’t have to worry about someone stealing your lost items. The last group that was stellar, was a group that was teaching people of all ages how to use spheros robots.
Without a doubt the use of technology may be different from one showcase to the next, but all students were excited to share how the use technology to be leaders in the school and community. All their ideas have a place at STLP. So students, if you have a project that you are passionate about, next time think about going to STLP where your project is always welcome and the possibilities are endless!
